The project will contribute to the strategic transformation of urban management in Kumanovo by integrating nature-based solutions into the planning and maintenance of public spaces. Based on technical and economic analyses, as well as recommendations from stakeholders, the municipality will gain a solid foundation for planning future investments. Long-term effects include increased climate resilience, improved energy efficiency, and reduced urban climate risks. By raising public awareness and fostering community engagement, the project will also create a cultural shift in citizens’ attitudes toward urban greenery and environmental stewardship.

The project will serve as a model for combining technical analysis, community engagement, and strategic planning to build a greener, more resilient, and energy-efficient urban environment in Kumanovo.

Overall objective(s):

Enhance climate resilience and energy efficiency in Kumanovo through the implementation of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Specific objectives:

• Conduct a detailed analysis and pre-feasibility study to assess Kumanovo’s potential for implementing nature-based solutions, including green roofs, green facades, and the reopening of sealed surfaces.
• Raise public awareness and encourage active community participation through public presentations, workshops, press conferences, and online promotion.

Expected results:

• Identification and mapping of critical urban areas for intervention based on climate risks, increasing resilience to climate change.
• Completion of a technical and economic pre-feasibility study with proposed nature-based solutions, including cost-benefit assessment to guide future investments.
• Enhanced public awareness and active citizen participation in planning, implementing, and maintaining nature-based solutions in Kumanovo.
• Strengthened coordination between municipal authorities, technical experts, and the community, promoting sustainable urban planning and long-term cultural change toward environmental protection and energy efficiency.
